Job Description

Position Summary:

The Manager in Training (MiT) will receive the company-specific training and on-the-job experience needed to assume a position as a Retail Manager. The MiT will learn supervisory and technical skills that are in alignment with the organization’s philosophies and operational strategies. The MiT will work as an apprentice under at least one experienced store manager, and gain the skills and experience in production, merchandising, inventory management, administration, and human resources needed for advancement to the Manager position.

The successful MiT will:

Demonstrate curiosity about how the business works how to improve results. Navigate reports and analyze data to identify where to probe for potential problems. Work hands-on in the business, side-by-side with the team to understand strengths and opportunities. Combine data with hands-on insight to drive continuous improvement in the business. Inspire action without relying solely on authority. Foster a sense of optimism, energy, ownership, and personal commitment in others. Help each person understand that their work is important. Hold frequent development discussions. Deal with performance concerns promptly, directly, fairly, and respectfully while maintaining a solutions-based focus. Ensure a positive work atmosphere where team member contributions are valued. Spend time on what’s important, quickly zero-in on the critical priorities and put the trivial aside.

The MiT must be willing to travel to different store locations (25%). MiT must be willing to relocate to accept a position of store manager. Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Conducts regular staff meetings that improve communication with staff, such as daily tool box talks, monthly department meetings, and weekly management team meetings

  • Develops a superior workforce (through the use of coaching conversations, development plans, and by taking action with any staff that are failing to meet expectations, as per HR direction)

  • Responsible for store performance and meets budgets in the following areas:

  • Revenue

  • Payroll

  • Controllable expenses

  • Ensures store attendance at monthly meetings pertaining to safety and asset protection

  • Ensures that weekly safety committee meetings are completed and submitted, along with follow up activities

  • Achieves Reality Based Safety Audit scores within acceptable range (90-100%). Action Plans completed in a timely manner.

  • Ensures consistent and accurate use of staffing model to schedule all staff (including manager) and to forecast, plan and track salary expenditures

  • Ensures timely and accurate reporting (paperwork and electronic “forms”) including those related to HR, Safety/Asset Protection and Accounting

Required Skills

  • Sensitive to guest needs and wishes

  • Ability to work effectively with people with disabilities or other special needs preferred

  • Must have computer experience and be competent in internet use and a variety of computer software applications.

  • Prefer profit and loss, sales, or cost management accountability experience.

  • Must have strong interpersonal, communication, monetary, organizational and decision making skills.

  • Must be able to read, write and speak the English language in order to communicate with staff and guests.

  • The MiT must be willing to travel to different store locations (25%).

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to move independently or with reasonable accommodation within the facility and community.

  • Applicant must be physically and mentally able to perform all requirements of the job.

  • Able to lift and carry 20-100 pounds with team lifting or mechanical assistance.

  • Able to stand, stoop, bend, or carry for extended periods

  • Able to go up and down steps.

  • Able to stand and walk entire shift.

  • Tolerance of extreme changes in temperature and humidity.

  • Must be able to work flexible hours, evenings, and weekends or longer shifts if needed.

  • May be required to work more than 40 hours per week.

  • Overnight travel and evening/weekend work may be required.

  • Must have reliable transportation, valid driver’s license and proof of personal vehicle insurance.

  • Must pass background and DMV check.

Required Experience

  • High School/Equivalent

  • 0-2 years

  • Retail or comparable management experience
